From childhood dream to graphic novel

As a kid, Moos Boeke wanted to become a children’s book author. He had forgotten about that dream until he started working on his graduation project: a graphic novel based on the short story Duizend Vadem by Benny Lindelauf. “Suddenly, I’m living that childhood dream, without even realising it. It just happened.”

Drawing it all out

“The best work comes from that sense of urgency, when it feels like the story is the whole world.” Moos often reflects on his role as an illustrator in the real world: “I follow the news, but it doesn’t show up in my work. Not everything has to be about all the suffering in the world.” For him, the power of illustration lies in beauty, comfort and wonder.

“I think it’s important that beautiful things are made. Things that bring comfort and offer a bit of hope.”

A step into the future

For this project, Moos asked for help from a tutor outside his own programme. The world of publishing was unfamiliar territory for Moos.“ArtEZ is the kind of school where you can just walk up to someone and say: hey, I could really use your help and they make time for you.”

For now, Moos knows what he wants: to make more books, maybe write his own stories and combine all his other interests, like jewellery-making. “A sort of creative ratatouille. That’s what I’d love most.”
